What A-Levels do you need for dentistry?

Official 2027 entry requirements compared. Last checked 31 October 2026.

UK dentistry courses usually ask for AAA to A*AA at A-Level, normally including Chemistry and Biology. The exact subjects differ, so check each course. For 2027 entry, King's College London asks for A*AA, while Birmingham and Manchester ask for AAA.

UniversityA-LevelsSubjects
King's College LondonA*AAA in Biology or Chemistry, plus A in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology
BirminghamAAA (predicted AAA required)Biology or Human Biology, and Chemistry
ManchesterAAAChemistry and Biology or Human Biology; three sciences also accepted

Do you need the UCAT?

Yes, for all three courses above. King's says it has no threshold UCAT score, and Birmingham says the test must be completed in the year of application, before the UCAS deadline. Other courses may differ.

Do predicted grades matter?

At Birmingham, yes: applicants must be predicted AAA including Biology or Human Biology and Chemistry, and resits aren't considered. King's also considers predicted grades. Schools finalise predictions at the end of Year 12 or the start of Year 13, depending on the school.

Lower offers

Some courses have lower offers for eligible applicants. Manchester lists AAB for contextual applicants, and Birmingham lists ABB through Pathways to Birmingham. King's says it doesn't make contextual offers for this programme.

When do you apply?

For 2027 entry, most dentistry courses had a UCAS deadline of 15 October 2026 at 18:00. Check UCAS for your own application year.
