What A-Levels do you need for medicine?

A plain guide for parents and students. Official requirements last checked 31 October 2026.

Most UK medicine applicants need top grades in three A-Levels, usually including Chemistry and often Biology. Requirements differ between medical schools, so always check the course you're applying to. For example, Nottingham's standard offer for 2027 entry is AAA, including Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry.

Do predicted grades matter?

It depends on the school. Nottingham says it doesn't use predicted A-Level grades in selection, while other courses do look at them. Birmingham dentistry, for instance, says applicants must be predicted AAA. Schools finalise predictions at the end of Year 12 or the start of Year 13, depending on the school, so grades in Year 12 can matter earlier than families expect.

When do you apply?

For 2027 entry, most medicine courses had a UCAS deadline of 15 October 2026 at 18:00. Check UCAS for the dates for your own application year.

Lower offers

Some schools publish lower offers for eligible applicants. At Nottingham, contextual offers for 2027 entry are AAB or ABB, with at least one A in Biology or Chemistry.
